Synopsis
Spanning four turbulent decades during the Troubles in Northern Ireland
The real Dolours Price was married to Irish actor Stephen Rea for two decades (1983-2003).
During this time, Rea appeared in the film for which she is arguably best known in the United States: the 1992 romantic thriller The Crying Game
In this film, Rea plays Fergus, a highly reluctant and ambivalent member of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) – the same organization that Price was involved with for many years.
She really did a great job portraying the main characters across multiple eras
I highly recommend reading the book for more context/information, but the series does a fantastic job of covering the material.
Overall, an incredibly well-done miniseries
The bigger themes for me are: -in war everyone thinks they’re on the right side -how far you’ll go for a cause you believe in and what happens when that belief is tested or eroded -the sacrificial pawns who carry the most risk in war are usually easily discarded in the end -the larger "code" of silence within the community sometimes goes too far -the spoils of war usually go to the bureaucrats, not the soldiers.
