Coppola abandoned the project entirely in 2007 and did not begin development again until 2019

Synopsis

The city of New Rome faces a duel between Cesare Catilina, a brilliant artist who advocates a utopian future, and Franklin Cicero, the greedy mayor. Among them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalty is divided between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved in part due to his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001 after shooting 30 hours of second unit footage and table readings with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falcon and Kevin Spacey, but the project was scrapped is after the 9/11 attacks, because the script scene (page 166) "predicted" attacks.

This movie reminded me of The Room and Adam Driver’s performance was more reminiscent of Tommy Wiseau. Tired dialogue and bad writing that he couldn’t fake. Since this was filmed during the pandemic, I wonder if they even met before acting or if they just came out of zooming.

The footage looked like a 2003 TV movie edited on Windows 95

I’m betting Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel and Aubrey Plaza will get Razzie nominations and maybe even win. I’ve never seen such a “talented” group of actors who lack so much self-awareness that they embarrass themselves and make us wonder if they really are talented. I left before the end because I couldn’t stand the bad dialogue, it felt like the actors were talking to a wall and they just learned their lines 5 minutes ago. That Hamlet opening speech was one of the worst I’ve ever seen.

This was low key, superficial and a waste of money

Instead, it went downhill very quickly

It all started out well; I even liked the mechanics they used (which I won’t spoil here). As someone said, it seemed like it was going to get really interesting very quickly. It turns out that all these friends are gathering at this house for a night of fun, okay – but we don’t really know them.

And all the others?

And because we don’t know them, we just don’t get invested in what’s going on. Sure, one of the couples is introduced early on, only through a very specific lens. We get hints, not many.

And the ride is a lot less fun than it thinks it is

They’re drawn pretty flatly and broadly, and as an audience, we don’t care enough to care beyond the surface level. I think what the film is trying to do here really demands that we invest. It’s like we’ve agreed to go on a rollercoaster ride with them, but before we can even say hello and exchange pleasantries, we’re strapped in and thrust into the next two hours.

I gave up after 35 minutes

I’m an avid watcher of all types of horror (I actually found Bodies Bodies Bodies entertaining) — but this one just didn’t do it for me. No need to waste time scrolling endlessly — here’s the full lineup of new movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix this month.
