The French title card misspells the Indian city as “Dehli”
Emilia Pérez follows four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness. Cartel leader Emilia enlists Rita, an underrated lawyer, to help her fake her death so she can finally live authentically as her true self. Karla Sofia Gascón talks about the two years of preparation for this challenging role in Jacques Audiard’s film and the two extremes of her own personality that she had to play as Emilia and Manita. Jacques Audiard said he was inspired by the idea for the musical from a chapter in the novel about a drug dealer who yearns to change his identity.

Much of the story is delivered with musical numbers, so if you don’t like that type of genre, stay away from it
Selena Gomez also stars as Jessi, the drug lord’s wife who is adjusting to her new life with the children she raised with him after undergoing a sex change she doesn’t know about. Then of course, Karla Sofía Gascón stars as Emilia Pérez, a drug lord who has changed gender and continues to build her (no longer “his”) empire. This movie in particular had a very strange effect on me after it ended, because I went into it blind, and to be honest, you have to, because overall the movie is very unexpected and quite comical in some places. as well.
The musical performance at the end was boring in my opinion, but I think it summed up part of the story a bit
After the film’s director and cast introduced it to us, the film started and the audience was joking and enjoying some aspects of the film, and I appreciate that. The film shines best because of the amazing cinematography (which was jaw-dropping to say the least), the powerful acting from everyone involved, and some of the musical numbers. Why do I say “some”; the musical numbers because most of them are quite great and impactful to the story, but as the film progresses, the musical numbers become much less eye-catching than they were before and as a result, they become clichés. But don’t listen to me because the film is for everyone and I really enjoyed some elements of this film and I think most of you will too when it comes out soon enough.

Overall, although not as I expected, Emilia Pérez is still a cinematic achievement in terms of musical numbers and great acting, which really makes the film even more appealing and entertaining. If you like musicals, give Emilia Pérez a try, I think she successfully delivers what the audience can expect from her.
