Synopsis
When maple syrup farmer Ruth Landry finds her livelihood under attack from greedy competitors who were once her friends, she devises a plan for revenge and shakes up the industry. Loosely based on the 2011-2012 theft of $18 million worth of maple syrup. Let me start by mentioning that I went into this show with mediocre to light expectations, so there were no major disappointments or real surprises.
There’s a certain smugness to the writing and directing that’s frankly undeserved
I found out about the real maple heist, saw the preview, and thought it would be a fun watch. And it can be a fun watch if you’re into a low-quality Fargo rip-off by people who don’t understand any of the action ingredients of the Coen brothers’ films. And I guess you could say that all the little elements they snatched from other films could have been homages and hat tips if they didn’t feel so awkward and inappropriately confident in their uniqueness.
It’s someone else’s work that leaks out time and time again
It’s the end of a game of telephone, and the sentence is almost unrecognizable. The only real draw to the show that kept me watching until the end was the actors. They give it 100%, even though the characters are all the same archetypes those actors always seem to play these days.
Funny, homey, bad-ass, weird-bad-ass
