After a traumatic event during his residency, young medical student James Hayman (Namir Smallwood) transfers to a rural hospital for a fresh start. Observing that James struggles to connect with patients and has difficulty coping, Dr. Harrison (veteran stage and screen actor Michael Potts) suggests he take a class focused on bedside manners and facilitating deeper relationships with patients. When he is swept up in the case of a young asthmatic patient (Sidney Flanigan, perhaps not infrequently) with mysterious symptoms, James’s grip on reality begins to slip. His disturbing nightmares, anxiety-inducing speculations, and physical injuries collide with the harsh realities of the medical world. Director Alex Thompson assembles a strong ensemble of veteran character actors in his follow-up to SAINT FRANCES, which is a precursor to GHOSTLIGHT – and within this humanistic and unconventional genre vision.
