Set against the backdrop of the beautiful Mediterranean, “Swept Away” is Lina Wertmiller’s most famous and controversial film about sex, love and politics. On a sleek yacht sailing off the coast of Sardinia, Raffaella (Mariangela Melato), a wealthy and gorgeous capitalist, enjoys torturing the communist sailor Gennarino (Giancarlo Giannini). Fate weaves a different scenario, and the roles change when the two end up together on a desert island. Rafaela must obey Gennarino in order to survive, culminating in a dramatic climax when they are rescued. They must determine if their love can survive the harsh realities of civilization.
